Chunghwa Post issued its first set of definitive postage stamps in its "Pets" series in December of 2005, and its second and third sets in March and August of 2006. Now it is following up with a fourth set of four stamps featuring two breeds of dog (Border Collie and Beagle) and two breeds of cat (American Shorthair and Maine Coon) denominated at NT$0.50, NT$13.00, NT$17.00 and NT$34.00 respectively. The designs follow: (1)Border Collie: It originated around the border of England and Scotland, which is why the breed is named Border Collie. The Border Collie has a long thick coat of slightly wavy hair. It is agile and highly energetic with great stamina. It is gentle and very trainable, making it a very good herding dog. (2)Beagle: The Beagle originated in the United Kingdom. Having a great sense of smell, it is used primarily for hunting hares. It doesn’t stop until it gets its prey, making it a very trustworthy hound. Its black, white and tan tri-color shorthaired coat and gentle disposition make it an ideal companion dog. (3)American Shorthair: The American Shorthair was bred from cats brought to the US by early European settlers. Its coat is short and coarse in texture. Among its various colorations, it is most well-known as a classic silver and black tabby with an M-shaped marking on its forehead. It has a round face and big round eyes, and its nose in profile shows a gentle concave curve. It is solidly built and has a cheerful and gentle temperament. (4)Maine Coon: The bred originated in Maine, on the east coast of the United States—hence the name Maine Coon. It has big round eyes and a hardy constitution. Its coat is sleek and dense, and its beautiful tail is as bushy as a raccoon’s. It was originally kept on farms for its talent at hunting mice. The Maine Coon is friendly to people and known for its gentleness, intelligence and playfulness.
