The Empress Dowager’s Birthday Commemorative Stamps returned to Shanghai by the Post Office various places were invariably surcharged in small characters. Before the issue of new stamps, an extra lot of such commemorative stamps was printed with the original dies (commonly known as Second Print) and then surcharged in silver dollar currency The characteristics of this issue are that the surcharge was made in larger Arabic figures with a wide interval (2 1/2 ㎜.) between the surcharged Chinese characters and surcharged Arabic figures in each stamp. Hence such stamps are known as〝Large Arabic Figures and Wide Interval Stamps〞.   Although stamps used for the surcharges were mostly of the 2nd print Dowager commemoratives, a small quantity of the 〝First Print〞stamps, which were returned from remote Post Offices at later dates, was also surcharged with the large character surcharge type. The surcharged work was done by the Customs statistical Department, Shanghai.
